Before and After – Travertine Fireplace Remodel

Travertine Fireplace 2 – Shepherd Stoneworks

This project was an unusual challenge.  The client had a two-story brick fireplace with another hearth in the upstairs bedroom, and he was interested in going over the brick with stone.  The house had a very Italian Villa look to it, and the brick just wasn’t doing it for them style-wise.

In the interest of conserving floor space, the owner chose to go with travertine tile instead of a ledgestone-style veneer material.  He had me draw up a design for the tile layout and we went to the Pental showroom to find not only the best tile but also to pick out the correct available trim material.

We found a combination of half-rounds, chair-rail trim (used for counter edges), crown molding and swirl mosaics that I could incorporate into the design.  In the case of the downstairs fireplace (shown to the right), the shape of the existing brick structure guided the design, though I added the tapered columns and enlarged the mantelpiece.

The owners planned for the section of plaster above as a place to hang artwork.  The place was sold soon after the remodel, so I never got to go back for pictures in a finished room.

Before the remodel

This is what that fireplace looked like when I came to bid the job.  Not bad, but the new look matches the style of the house better.

The upstairs fireplace had a much simpler shape which I decorated with a band of mosaic tile and trim.  There is a face plate over the firebox (added later) with glass doors.

Prepping that portion was an unexpected hurdle, as I recall.  I covered the entire brick surface with an expensive polymeric thinset, and that took a while.  Then, because the brick was not entirely square and the surface not entirely even, finessing the tile into a rectilinear shape was more than a little challenging.  But it turned out well, nonetheless.

Q:  Does Shepherd Stoneworks do tile work?
